ADULT EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Function:  To develop, implement and evaluate the adult educational ministries of the church.

Purpose:  To oversee Adult Church School, Spring and Fall Adult Retreats, Adult Small Group Studies, and Disciple Bible Study.

Meets: Monthly as scheduled by the chair person.

Amenable to:  Committee on Education, Church Council, and Charge or Church Conference.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Contact:   Church School Superintendent and Adult Education Chairperson.

Function:  To create communities in which people of all ages experience God’s active presence in their lives; foster healthy, nonviolent relationships within the congregation and community; testify to the reconciling love of God through Christ; and live out their faith in the world as witnesses to the coming reign of God.

Purpose:  To plan, oversee and evaluate the educational ministries of the church including church school, youth groups, adult education, family life, college-age ministries and nursery care.

Composition: Chairperson; pastors; youth ministry director; seminary interns; Sunday School Superintendent; Church School staff; Adult Education chairperson; Confirmation class teacher; Church librarians; Family Life Coordinators; Higher Education and Campus Ministry Coordinator; Nursery Coordinator; Summer Sundays Coordinator; UMYF Representative; Vacation Church School Coordinators; other members to be added as the charge conference may determine.

Meets: Monthly (currently meeting on 2nd Mondays at 7:30)

CHURCH COUNCIL

Function:  The executive agency of the Charge Conference.

Purpose:  Shall provide for planning and implementing a program of nurture, outreach, witness, and resources in the local church.  It shall also provide for the administration of its organization and temporal life.  It shall envision, plan, implement, and annually evaluate the mission and ministry of the church.

Amenable to:  Charge or Church Conference (note:  Membership of the charge conference consists of the elected members of the Church Council with the District Superintendent or designated Elder as Chair.  A church conference functions with the same authority as a charge conference, however, voice and vote is extended to all Professing Members of the congregation.)

Meets: At least quarterly.  The chairperson or the pastor may call special meetings.  Currently the Church Council meets on the 1st Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

Structure:  The meetings are led by the Chairperson of the Church Council. The Recording Secretary takes minutes which are approved at the following meeting. Also in attendance are the Financial Secretary, Church Treasurer, Church Historian, Lay Leader and Alternate Lay Leaders who attend Annual Conference.  Also attending:

From Education Ministries the Chairpersons of Education, Adult Education, Member Care, Scholarship and Worship committees.

From Outreach Ministries, the Chairpersons of Outreach, the Growth Committee and the Institutional Representative for the Boy Scouts.

From Witness Ministries, the Chairpersons of Growth, Information Technology, Webmaster, and Membership.

From the Resources and Administrative Committees:  the Chairpersons of the Board of Trustees, Lay Leadership, Memorials, Permanent Endowment Fund, Staff-Parish Relations and Stewardship/Finance.

From the Fellowship and Service Groups, the Chairpersons for the United Methodist Men, United Methodist Women,  and United Methodist Youth.

The Church Staff is also in attendance.  In addition, there are also approximately nine Members at large who are chosen from the general congregation.


COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Function: To work to improve communication of the church’s programs within and without the church and create a Communications Strategy for the church.

Purpose:  To improve communication within and without the church.

Meets: Adhoc.

Amenable to the Church Council.


ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE

Function: To receive, administer, and invest bequests, trusts, or trust funds for which the donor has designated the committee to receive, administer, or invest the same.  To see that the provisions of the current United Methodist Discipline are being followed concerning investments and the governing policy of the local church for the endowment fund.

Purpose: (1) To develop for Church Council and Charge/Church Conference annual approval, policies to accomplish the primary function of this committee; (2) To emphasize the need for adults to have a will and an estate plan and to provide information for the preparation of these to the congregation; (3) Stress the opportunities for church members and constituents to make provisions for giving through United Methodist churches, institutions, agencies, and causes by means of wills, annuities, trusts, life insurance, memorials, and various types of property; (4) Arrange for the dissemination of information that will be helpful in pre-retirement planning, including such considerations as establishing a living will, a living trust, and the need for each person to designate someone to serve as a responsible advocate should independent decision-making ability be lost.

Meets: At least quarterly and at the call of the Chair.

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE

Function: To supervise the periodic church fellowship events such as Valentine’s Night, Advent Night and any other events they wish to have.

Meets:  As needed to organize fellowship events.


GROWTH COMMITTEE

Function: To develop ways for the church membership to grow in size.

Purpose: To make the church more visible in the community and cyber-space. To develop and implement a plan for church growth.

Composition: Chairperson; pastor and other members to be added as the charge conference may determine.

Meets: Monthly (currently meeting on 3rd Tuesdays at 7:30)

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

Function: To make the church more accessible via cyber space.  And to understand the technology and communication needs of the church office.

Purpose: To plan, design, implement and evaluate the church’s website and to do the same for the church office computer network.

Meets: Ad hoc

LAY LEADERSHIP

Function: To identify, develop, deploy, evaluate, and monitor Christian spiritual leadership for the local congregation.  Members of the committee shall engage in and be attentive to developing and enhancing their own Christian spiritual life in light of the mission of the Church.

Purpose: In conducting its work, the committee shall engage in biblical and theological reflections on the mission of the church, the primary task, and ministries of the local church.  It shall provide a means of identifying the spiritual gifts and abilities of the membership.  The committee shall work with the church council to determine the diverse ministry tasks of the congregation and the skills needed for leadership.

The committee on lay leadership shall serve throughout the year to guide the church council on matters regarding the leadership (other than employed staff) of the congregation so as to focus on mission and ministry as the context for service; guide the development and training of spiritual leaders; recruit, nurture, and support spiritual leaders; and assist the church council in assessing the changing leadership needs.

Composition: No more than 9 persons in addition to the pastor and lay leader.  At least one young adult shall serve as a member of the committee.  One or more members may be youth.  The pastor shall be chairperson of the committee.  A layperson elected by the committee shall be the vice-chairperson.  In order to secure experience and stability, the membership shall be divided into three classes, one of which shall be elected each year for a three-year term.  In the identification and selection process, care shall be given that the leadership of ministries reflects inclusivity and diversity.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Function:  To nurture persons who wish to join the church.

Purpose:  To provide for: 3 new member classes during the year, Fellowship Friends for all of those joining the church; a special Fellowship time after each worship service on the Sundays new members are received.

Composition:  Chairperson; pastor; coffee hour coordinators; other members to be added as the charge conference may determine.

Meets: Monthly (currently meeting on 4th Mondays at 7:00)

MEMORIALS COMMITTEE

Function: Maintenance of memorial records; to make recommendations concerning the use of undesignated memorial funds to the Trustees.

Purpose: To ensure that the memorial log book is kept up to date and in good condition; to consider the needs of the church and specific requests for the use of undesignated memorial funds; after careful consideration to make recommendations to the Trustees concerning the use of memorial funds; to promote the existence and purpose of the memorial fund.

Meets: At the call of the Chair.

Amenable to: The Trustees (functions as a sub-committee of the Trustees)


OUTREACH COMMITTEE

Function: To connect the local church with issues and needs in the surrounding community, county, state, nation and world.

Purpose: To receive funds for dispersal to various charitable groups and world missions.  To promote the annual community CROP walk.  To inform and educate the congregation concerning social justice issues in the community and beyond.

Structure: Committee Chairperson and as many individuals as may be recruited by the Lay Leadership Committee.

Meets: Monthly (currently meets on 4th Wednesdays of the month at 7:00)

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Function: To distribute scholarship funds from the annual income of the scholarship portion of the Endowment Fund portfolio.

Purpose: To receive applications from those in the congregation attending institutions of higher learning, determine criteria for awarding of scholarships and overseeing the process of paying the awarded scholarships directly to the institutions.

Meets: In the early spring

STAFF PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The committee shall identify, develop, evaluate, and monitor Christian spiritual leadership for the local congregation.

Purpose: The committee shall reflect biblically and theologically on the role and work of the pastor(s) and staff as they carry out their leadership responsibilities.  The committee shall assist the pastor(s) and staff in assessing their gifts and setting priorities for leadership and service.  (See 2004 Book of Discipline ¶259.2.g for sixteen detailed duties of the committee.)

Composition:5-9 persons representative of the total charge.  One of the members shall be a young adult and one member may be a youth.  In addition, the lay leader and a lay member of the annual conference shall be members.  In order to secure experience and stability, the membership shall be divided into three classes, one of which shall be elected each year for a three-year term.  The lay member of the annual conference and the lay leader are exempt from the three-year term.

Meets: At least quarterly (currently it meets the 4th Monday of every month at 7:00)

Amenable to:  Charge conference and church council

Members for this committee are proposed by the Nominations Committee and voted upon at the annual Church Charge Conference.


STEWARDSHIP FINANCE COMMITTEE

Function: To compile annually a complete budget for the local church and submit it to the church council for review and adoption.

Purpose: The committee shall be charged with responsibility for developing and implementing plans that will raise sufficient income to meet the budget adopted by the church council.  It shall administer the funds received according to instructions received from the church council.  (Note: Where there is no stewardship ministry area, stewardship shall be the responsibility of a subgroup of the committee on finance.)

Composition:  Chairperson; pastors; lay member of the annual conference; chairperson of church council; chairperson or representative from SPRC; a representative of the trustees to be selected by the trustees; chairperson of the ministry group on stewardship; lay leader; financial secretary; treasurer; church business administrator; other members to be added as the charge conference may determine.


BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Function: To care for all real property owned by the church.

Purpose: The trustees shall review annually the adequacy of property, liability, personnel and crime insurance.  The trustees shall ensure that permission which is granted to outside groups for use of church property is consistent with the Social Principles and ecumenical objectives of the United Methodist Church.  Shall provide for an annual review of the church owned parsonage and ensure proper maintenance.  Shall at the direction of the charge conference, receive and administer all bequests, trusts, and shall invest all trust funds of the local church in conformity with the laws of the country, and state.  Shall conduct an annual accessibility audit of buildings, grounds, and facilities to discover and identify what barriers exist that impede full participation of people with disabilities.


YOUTH MINISTRY COUNCIL

Purpose:  In order to develop an intentional, vital youth ministry at PUMC, one that insures the connection between the youth and all areas of the life of our church, the Church Health Team recommends that the Church Council charter a Youth Ministry Council which has representation on Church Council and is accountable to the Education Committee.  This council will be responsible for crafting, coordinating and sustaining a youth ministry program at PUMC.  We recommend that membership on this council include at a minimum the PUMC Youth Director and Youth Choir Director, and include additional adult and youth representation.

UNITED METHODIST MEN

The Princeton United Methodist Men‘s fellowship accomplishes the goals and objectives of UMM by serving monthly breakfasts, hosting a Bible Study and prayer group each week, sponsoring and supporting various community activities and participating in district, conference and national level UMM events. If you would l like to help with planning for any of the above events, please contact Peter using the e-mail address above to express your interest.


UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

United Methodist Women raise funds to provide a hot meal and computer lessons, warm clothes for various outreach ministries.

The United Methodist Women need people to help organize the Spring and Fall Flea Markets and help plan and organize circle meetings, picnics and other social events that minister to the needs of women in the church and the community at large.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE

Function:  To prepare the sanctuary for worship and collaborate with the staff to plan the worship experience at PUMC.

Purpose:To assure that our members experience God through worship at PUMC. This includes a variety of tasks including:

  • caring for all real property pertaining to the sanctuary including paraments, altar cloths, communion vessels, candles, organ, carillon, technology, etc.
  • recruiting, training and scheduling acolytes, ushers, altar guild members, sound and Information Technology teams
  • supporting the music staff
  • planning the worship for Laity Sunday
  • decorating the sanctuary for seasonal events such as – Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Palm Sunday and Easter, as well as for sermon series throughout the year.
  • communicating with the congregation about the worship experience — sharing plans, gathering feedback, etc.

Composition:  Chairperson; pastor; music staff; acolyte coordinator; altar guild; head usher; other members to be added as the charge conference may determine.
