Worship Participation

In addition to attending worship services at Princeton United Methodist Church, there are a number of areas of service.  If you are a singer or musician, the Music Program will welcome you. Join a choir or play your instrument at worship throughout the year.  Please visit the Our Choirs pages in this section of the website or contact a member of the Staff.

Ways to Serve

Youth serve as Acolytes at the beginning and end of worship services.

Acolytes:  Young people serve as Acolytes.  They light the candles at the start of each worship service and extinguish them at the end. Fifth through seventh graders are invited to participate.  To help this run smoothly, acolyte responsibilities include:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the service on the days you are scheduled (9:15 for the 9:30 a.m. service and 10:45 for the 11 a.m. service)
  • 9:30 service: leave Church School early on the days you are an acolyte so you can return to the sanctuary with enough time to extinguish the candles at the end of the service.
  • Arrange a substitute on days you cannot attend.
  • Serve as an acolyte on Christmas Eve.
  • Help prepare the palms on the Saturday before Palm Sunday.

For additional information, acolytes@princetonumc.org.

Audio/Visual Team – Audio team controls the sound system and records the sermons. The projection team sets up the projection system and controls the display of the worship schedule on the wall.

The Altar Guild is a dedicated group of volunteer church members who prepare the Sanctuary for worship every Sunday. They place flower arrangements and candles on the altar and prepare the elements for the communion service. There are other special duties throughout the year. Volunteers are being sought to help with both worship services.  For additional information, altar-guild@princetonumc.org.

Choirs singing at Worship:  Please visit the Choir pages to find out about our choirs.  New singers, handbell ringers, and instrumentalists are always welcome. For additional information please contact hyosang@princetonumc.org.

Coffee Hour: Following the worship service on Sunday mornings there is a coffee hour in the Sanford-Davis Room, which is adjacent to the Sanctuary.  Stop by for a cup of coffee, refreshments, and to talk with visitors and fellow church members.  During the summer months, please stop by for a refreshing cold drink. You will find signup sheets for hosting a coffee hour in the Sanford-Davis Room or you may contact coffee-hour@princetonumc.org for additional information.

Greeters:  We value this important task as a part of our effort to extend radical hospitality to visitors.  If you can help us put a friendly face on the church, welcome visitors and help them navigate the building, we want you! Do it on your own, or make it a family event.  What’s most important is that we let our visitors know from the very first moment that we are glad they have come to worship with us. To help out please contact office@princetonumc.org.

Lay Readers: Members of the congregation have an opportunity to read the Scripture lessons during the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services (10 am during Summer). Contact office@princetonumc.org

Note-Writers:  Wouldn’t it be nice for our visitors to receive a hand-written thank you note from the congregation? If you think you have a way with words, or if you just have a lot of practice because your momma raised you right, help us welcome our visitors properly. Who knows? They may just come back again! If you’d like to help, please contact the office@princetonumc.org.

Ushers: We always need ushers to serve at worship services.  They hand out Bulletins, help people find seats, hand out name tags, collect the offering, gather attendance sheets and greet visitors. Would you like to become an usher? Please contact ushers@princetonumc.org.
